13-th European-Ukrainian Energy Day was held in Vienna

24 October 2022
Last week Lena Rybak took part in 13th Energy Day, organized by the European-Ukrainian Energy Agency. She moderated the 2nd session “Fight for freedom: sustainability, energy efficiency, decarbonization”.
Seven speakers took floor at the session:
  •  Torsten Wollert, Minister Councellor, Energy EU Delegation to Ukraine;
  •  Marco Matteini, Industrial Development Officer and Climate Change Branch at United Nations Industrial Development Organization;
  •  George Christodorescu, Head of Energy and Climate Cluster GIZ – Ukraine, Head of Just Transition Project and Head of Energy Efficiency EG;
  •  Kostiantyn Gura, Head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Projects Ukraine;
  •  Alexander Antoyuk, Energy Sector Specialist, Eastern Partnership Countries, EIB;
  •  Eduard Yakubov, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, IFC Energy Efficiency Fund;
  •  Oksana Aliieva, “Climate change and Energy Policy” Program Coordinator, Heinrich Boell Foundation, Kyiv Office.
With opening remarks Olena reminded that on the first energy day 13 years ago there was one key message delivered by international community – energy efficiency has to become a national priority. Speakers of the 13th Energy Day listed the key factors towards energy transition nowadays:
  • Financing as an instrument will promote optimization in all sectors. Banks are developing new concepts how to speed up the implementation of projects, optimizing mandatory procedures and steps. At the same time finance flows need to be adjusted in line with climate goals (including such aspects as support to poor inhabitants’ groups and integration of gender and compliance factors).
  •  Integration of new technologies will allow industries to save up to 20% of energy recourses and households – up to 50%. The process of infrastructure rebuild has to meet modern standards within the new war context, and create opportunities.
  • Human resources – people`s unity and behavior, competencies, thus wise decision making and planning are the most important. It is necessary to think two steps forward on how energy efficiency sector will change.
We have to create conditions for energy transition– cooperate together with IFIs, private investors and donors while ensuring greener future and sustainable reconstruction.
