Project objectives

At the site of the former hospital in Klosterneuburg-Maria Gugging a research facility for the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) has been established.
The “Flexible Purpose Lab” is a further stage in the expansion of IST Austria’s campus.

Project description

Implementation phase II focused on the construction of the Bertalanffy Foundation Building located on the campus to the east of the refurbished main building. The intention was to cover a variety of fields of research, thus the name “Flexible Purpose Lab”. The building has an aesthetically sophisticated glass façade with vertical glass lamellas.

Project data

On an area of 4,200 m² a new three-storey building has been constructed, which houses labs, offices and a service zone in the centre of the building. On the 2nd and 3rd floors a bridge connects the new building to the main building.

Project specifics

Particular challenges in this project were the enormous complexity of the building – in particular the technical building equipment – and the very tight schedule. What was demanded was a rather flexible design of the lab building allowing to determine the exact utilisation and requirements during construction or even after completion of construction works. As the construction pit was located below groundwater level additional measures were required to lower the groundwater level (pumps).

iC was in charge of site supervision (construction works, technical building equipment, lab technology) and site coordination for the construction of the lab building and various additional projects.
