Project objectives

The Angostura gold-silver mining project (Eastern Cordillera, Colombia) has been explored by Greystar Resources (Canada) since 1995. In 2008 the feasibility study for open pit mining was launched.
The design of the open pit mining project is based on detailed geological-geotechnical investigations of the area with the main focus on rock mechanics and slope stability.

Project description

The services of iC comprised:
– Geological-geotechnical mapping
– Interpretation of rock mechanic test results
– Geological-geotechnical rock mass characterisation
– 3-D modelling of open pit mine
– Analysis of slope stability taking into account discontinuity controlled failure at bench-scale and interramp scale as well as a numerical stability analysis of the global pit slope
– Geotechnical design of the open pit (slope configuration)

Project data

The Angostura project ranks among the largest precious metal mining projects of the Northern Andes. A daily amount of some 70,000 tons of ore are to be mined over a scheduled period of 15 years.

Project specifics

– Geotechnical data collection in the final stage of the project
– Analysis and geological interpretation of more than 300,000 m of core drilling
– Enormous dimensions: open pit slope of up to 820 m height
