Gender Talk: Gender in engineering

Future public areas, where everyone feels comfortable – women, men and children – are those planned to ensure security and comfort of users, designed to fit the physical needs of all genders, and built through inclusive, transparent dialogue with all genders equally represented in the decision making and implementation process. 
It is also about the wide sidewalks convenient for parents with strollers, regulated traffic management system, when cars are not prioritized over pedestrians and public lighting makes women feel equally protected and safe. Consideration of gender aspect at the stage of design and planning of residential areas and public infrastructure will allow to make this comfort a part of our everyday life. 

There are inspiring examples of gender mainstreaming in design of residential and public areas. One of the most famous is Aspern in Vienna, in the design of which the gender aspect was сonsidered already 30 years ago.

Ukraine makes first steps in this direction and the issue is just beginning to come out in public. At Gender Talk: Гендер в інжинірингу of the EU-Ukraine Women in Politics Lena Rybak told how consideration of gender aspects in engineering can positively change people`s life and create a new understanding of infrastructure while fostering sustainable development of communities.
