The city of Mykolaiv has launched the project ‘Non-Revenue Water: Reconstruction of the Water Supply System in a Selected Area of Mykolaiv, Ukraine’, which involves the reconstruction of the water system in the city’s Korabelnyi district.
The project’s goal is to reduce water losses due to the poor condition of water networks and constant pipe bursts and to help restore the city’s water supply infrastructure.
Mykolaiv’s water supply system was destroyed in 2022 by the Russian occupiers. Residents of Mykolaiv depend on emergency water supply, which is provided mainly by trucks and supplemented by desalination of salt water from the Dnipro-Bug estuary, as well as new wells hastily drilled.
The Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv was chosen to implement a demonstration project to restore and reconstruct the entire water supply system. Due to the high population density, a large number of multi-storey buildings and problems with the water supply network, a residential neighbourhood was chosen. The water distribution network in the Korabelnyi district is currently in a very poor technical condition, with water leakage from pipes reaching around 40%.
The project is funded by Denmark, which, through the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has allocated €7.2 million for project implementation and technical assistance.
iC consulenten is acting as an implementation consultant for the project.
Since the spring of 2024, Denmark has also been financing another water supply reconstruction project in Mykolaiv under the Danish Sustainable Infrastructure Financing Programme (SIFP)
